It is a member of the Thuringian color pigeon group, which is known for its diverse colors and markings.

Origin

The Thuringian Self pigeon originated in Germany, specifically in the Thuringia region. The breed has been developed since the 19th century and is believed to have descended from the rock pigeon (Columba livia).

Breed Characteristics

The Thuringian Self pigeon is a medium-sized bird, weighing up to 400 grams. It has a curved head, colored eyes, and a medium-sized beak. The breasts are large and well-rounded, and the back is long and slightly angled. The wings are long and large, covering the back, and the tail is also large. The paws are of medium length, and the pigeons have well-developed plumage.

Temperament

Thuringian Self pigeons are known to be reserved but obedient. They can adapt to their surrounding environment and become comfortable with their human owners over time. They are gentle birds that usually sit tight on the nest.

Preferred Living Conditions

Thuringian Self pigeons require a spacious housing that allows them to walk and flap their wings. An aviary with a nesting box can be provided if necessary. It is recommended to add branches and lofts to encourage the pigeons to be more active. Regular cleaning of the housing is important to prevent the accumulation of droppings that could affect the pigeons’ health. Access to clean water is essential for hydration and cleanliness.

While it is primarily used for show purposes, it can also be kept as a pet. Thuringian Self pigeons are easy to care for and can live for an average of six to ten years with proper maintenance and periodic checkups by a veterinarian.
