Memel Highflyer

The Memel Highflyer, also known as Memeler Hochflieger, Haut-volant de Memel, or Мемельский высоколетный, is a fancy pigeon breed that originated in Lithuania. It is considered to be one of the ancient pigeon breeds and was mainly raised in Memel, which is now known as Klaipeda. The exact origins of the Memel Highflyer are not fully understood, but it is believed that it was developed by crossing local breeds with Bremer and Hanoverian pigeons brought by merchants to Memel at the time.

Origin

The Memel Highflyer is an old native breed that only became apparent outside of its home in Pamarys after 1920. The breed has a long history in the region and has been actively bred by fanciers in Memel. After the reunification of East and West Germany in 1991, the pigeon clubs in the Memel region joined together and continued breeding the Memel Highflyer under the traditional name of Klub.
