Origin
The Rostov Tumbler, also known as Culbutant de Rostov, Rostower Positurtümmler, or Capitombolante in Rostov, is a Russian breed of pigeon. It began to be developed in the Volga and Don territories, but later adopted the name of the city Rostov. The exact date since when varieties belonging to this Russian tumbler pigeon type started to emerge is unknown.
Breed Characteristics
The Rostov Tumbler is a medium-sized pigeon with a low and stocky stature. It has a prominent breast and a graceful appearance. The neck trembles when the pigeon is excited, and the wings are carried below the high tail. The tail is wider than the breast, flat, and without any distinctive markings. The head is round, with a slightly protruding forehead compared to regular pigeons. The beak can be short or medium in length, and its color varies depending on the coloration of the pigeon. The cere, which is the fleshy skin above the beak, is round in shape. The neck is usually thick, and the primaries or longest wing feathers should be long and well-built to enable long flights. The eye color of the Rostov Tumbler also varies, with pearl-colored or yellow eyes being preferred in some breeds.
Temperament
There is no specific information available about the temperament of the Rostov Tumbler.
Preferred Living Conditions
The Rostov Tumbler requires a well-built pigeon loft that allows it to fly freely and provides protection from adverse weather conditions. The loft should also have nesting areas for breeding and feeding. Proper ventilation and cleanliness are essential for maintaining the health and well-being of the pigeons. Fresh and clean water should be available at all times, and a varied diet that includes fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and pellets should be provided.
Usage
The Rostov Tumbler is primarily used as a show breed. Its tumbling abilities, though slightly diminished compared to its ancestors, are still a sought-after trait. These pigeons are known for their aerial acrobatics, including mid-air tumbles, rolls, and flips. They are often presented at events and pigeon shows to showcase their flying skills and entertain the audience. Some breeders also keep them as pets for their unique personality and antics.
