Horseman Pouter

The Horseman Pouter, also known as the Horseman Thief Pouter or the Big Doos, is a pigeon breed used for capturing other pigeons. It is a sport of utilizing pigeons to capture other pigeons, where the Horseman Pouter has been a top choice for years. There are three types of this pigeon breed: Pygmy Pouter, Horseman Cropper, and Horseman Pouter.

Origin

The origin of the Horseman Pouter breed is unknown. However, it is believed to have been developed in Scotland and England, possibly as far back as the 17th century.

Breed Characteristics

The Horseman Pouter is characterized by its large, inflated crop which gives it a unique and attractive appearance. It is a tall breed, with some individuals reaching up to 16 inches in height. The body is slim with a V-shaped keel, and the legs are long and clad in smooth feathers. The wings, when opened and spread, can measure three or more feet across.

Temperament

The Horseman Pouter is known for its tame and friendly nature. It is naturally tame due to selective breeding for the ability to distend the crop. These pigeons are generally promiscuous and have a high sex drive. They are entertaining birds in the loft, show pen, and while flying around the yard.

Preferred Living Conditions

The Horseman Pouter can be kept in a loft or cage. They require a spacious area to move around and exercise their long legs. It is important to provide them with a nesting area where they can safely lay and incubate their eggs. They also need a well-balanced diet consisting of grains, seeds, and fresh water.

Usage

The Horseman Pouter is primarily used for capturing other pigeons. Due to their attractive appearance and wooing abilities, they are successful in stealing and retrieving wild pigeons and other fanciers’ pigeons back to their loft. They have a strong homing instinct and are nimble in flight.
